Update on the Q5 head restraint problem I wrote about in October '09. As expected the dealers don't want to know and I suspect haven't even bothered to consult Audi UK or Germany about this. "Buy a wedge cushion to prop you up". Crazy as it may seem with all the rigorous testing that manufacturers put their new designs through, if testers use dolls of "average height" which might be 5ft 5 - 6in, then they won't even realise that there is a problem. I have suggested that my dealer tell Audi UK that one of their customers has this problem and that for the future, all dealers worldwide should make sure that potential owners check that the position of the head restraint is right for them. If not, suggest that they consider ordering their new car with sports seats which does not have the problem of head restraints being too high for petite drivers - 5ft 3in and under. Whilst many might not give the position your head rests against the head restraint any thought, remember that this becomes very important in an accident. Hence, head restraint, not headrest!

Bought from showroom with Tech. pack giving cruise control, leather & heated seats, electric folding mirrors and electric tailgate. Chose petrol over diesel because journeys are mainly short. Full tank £65-£70, lasts 2 weeks. Ride a little hard but suspension is not bad. Seats are big and a bit firm. Boot is huge, great for sports kits and large musical intruments. Satnav system is good and gives info about nearest petrol station, etc. Has strange dial(like "smart key" on mobiles) in the centre of the controls, used to select what facility you want. Useful technolgy like driving from stationary with automatic handbrake release feature. Interior finish is good.
BIG Problem discovered after collecting the car-the headrest is too high even when pushed all the way down. 1" gap between bottom of headrest and top of seat means that, being 1.61m or 5ft 3in, only the top of my head touches the headrest. Correct position is the middle of the back of our heads - even the manual points that out! Does this mean that the Q5 is not suitable for people 5ft 3in and shorter? Have spoken to Audi Customer Services and dealer. Initial response was "nothing we can do, headrest is 3rd generation design". I suggested checking to see if any other headrest from their very wide range of models would provide the correct support. They finally agreed to do so. I will let you know the outcome but just in case there are any petite ladies thinking of buying a Q5..
