Volkswagen Eos CC

What’s it like to drive? In Greek mythology, Eos is the Titan goddess of the dawn. But you don’t need to be a celestial body to appreciate the Volkswagen Eos: it drives like a dream wherever you take it and doesn’t squirm like some of its rivals. With the folding roof up, it’s so quiet you could forget you’re in a convertible: there are no draughty drawbacks. And if the sun’s a-shining and you’ve got the roof down, your hair won’t get messed up by the wind. The 3.2 V6 is the fastest, the 2.0-litre turbo petrol the most fun.
What’s it like inside? At last: a convertible for socialites! The Volkswagen Eos genuinely seats four adults – a rare thing for cars of this nature (and you don’t even have to be double-jointed). Up front, you can climb in without bumping your head and tweak the seat and steering wheel until they fit your contours perfectly. It’s easy to see what’s going on around you, even with the roof up. And you get an integrated sunroof. Planning a weekend away? You can get a couple of suitcases in the boot when the roof’s down; a few extra bags when it’s raised. And it comes with plenty of kit, from alloys to air-con and optional aluminium racing-style foot pedals.
Will it break the bank? The Volkswagen Eos is pricey but it does look the part and you won’t lose much money when you sell it. It’s finished to a very high standard inside, and the rest of the car demands little more than the occasional service. Friends in the back seats aren’t protected by airbags but you do get ISOFIX child seat mountings in the front and back, plus stability control. And there are roll bars that spring up to protect heads if the car senses it’s about to turn over.
